This is not good for playing in summer time by the beach, as I am doing this often. MBP2012 to MBP 2018 should be a huge leap, but it seems that it is not, according to benchmarks.Ģ018 with i9 CPU has heat issues as I am reading all over the place.

I wish I can test out these machines somehow. Utility Monitor’s memory pressure function can help to see if your present system is short on RAM. More than 16GB RAM will only help, as jestermgee says, if you are using more than that amount of RAM so the system is constantly swapping stuff in and out of the swap file. If aftermarket RAM is available (I think Crucial do some) you’d need to factor in enough money to get to at least 16GB but that’s still going to be cheaper than paying Apple for 16GB.

Not as convenient as using a laptop but they’re still fairly portable and aren’t that much more expensive than the 16” i9 MBP. It’s even possible to gig with an iMac - I’ve seen it done. My 2014ish i7 flattens it’s battery like a Saturn 5 rocket eats fuel if I run Live or Logic without plugging it in first. If you are gigging then I doubt you’d be able to run a DAW on an i9 MBP for very long on battery anyway. As far as I know they can also accept RAM from vendors other than Apple which can save quite a lot of money compared to paying Apple’s RAM prices. If you don’t I suggest taking a look at the 27” i9 iMacs, which should offer more power (faster cpu) and probably better cooling. You don’t say if you need this computer for gigging. Trouble you can only find out for certain that a computer will be up to what you want it to do is trying it out. I guess you need to offset that investment with the income you would earn and how long it would take to pay for itself especially if you consider you may not get the improvements you want and there is always a chance that other problems are introduced that cause other issues and there is nothing woirse than spending a small fortune on a solution that doesn't quite meet expectations. It's never really necessary to run your raw project in a live situation, most of it can just be flattened or grouped and rendered so you have only a small number of tracks to save from all kinds of issues. If you perform live then I would stick with rendering as much as possible that you don't need to run live. There is only so much a processor can do. Sometimes people can get a little carried away thinking they need to have access to everything for a live performance where some proper planning and set design could improve things much more. Your live set seems very large and I can't help but wonder if you couldn't streamline it a little. Ram may help improve things if the bulk was sample based but from your details, you are asking a LOT from any system really. The more synthesis and effects you demand, the more work it must do. The main bottleneck is how fast the processors cores can process all the demands to generate sounds. Ram probably won't make a lick of difference as it does little to improve performance unless you are already maxing out your ram currently.

#VCS3 EMULATOR FOR MAC BOOK PRO PRO#
I'm no Mac expert, I use them for only programming and testing and have just a modest i5 2019 pro and prefer (personally) to use PC but I also am not a live performer with Ableton Live.įor that many tracks you want a processor with lots of cores and threads, the more the better. What will 32GB DDR4 ram do for me compared to 2012's 16GB DDR3? I am just wondering how much more power I will really get, considering it is a huge price difference between these two, and the benchmark only says 30-40% more performance on the CPU. MPB 2012 was able to run this, but with some limitations (lots of bouncing tracks to audio). The current size of my liveset is 8-10GB.

Also, want to record additional two to four audio channels of the entire 2-hour long live set as well, alongside live looping, VST's, samples, and a pretty loaded heavy project. Hoping to be able to drop my buffer from 512 to 128 with this machine.for loopers and less latency when playing.

I am mostly running heavy VST and UAD plugins in project with 250+ channels for live (Omnisphere, NI Komplete, Arturia, Vintage Vault, Sound Toys, EW Play) I am thinking about getting MBP 2018 with the top spec.Īnyone says I should not do this? Any experiences? I have heard it gets too hot. I am about to replace my old 2012 MBP top spec.
